Translating Critical Appraisal of a Manuscript into Meaningful Peer Review

This 3.5-hour workshop includes a lecture relating to the peer review process followed by hands-on critical appraisal of manuscripts in small groups to practice assessing manuscripts and providing useful feedback to authors and editors.

This workshop includes pre-workshop exercises that must be completed prior to attendance in order to maximize the usefulness of the workshop. These exercises include reading and critically appraising two manuscripts.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To describe the purpose and process of peer review from the perspective of the author, editor, and reader;
  • To review and become familiar with data regarding the effectiveness and utility of the peer review process;
  • To practice critical appraisal of manuscripts for peer review;
  • To understand how to provide reviewer feedback to the editors as part of the peer review process.
